 About the Unit

Based on the Heath and Physical Education content of the Australian Curriculum, the following unit seeks to inform students on the importance of a Healthy Body Image. Content Descriptors from the Digital Technologies Strand of the Australian Curriculum have been integrated within this unit with elements of all three dimensions of Health Literacy. Students will undertake a number of lessons to gain an understanding of the importance of a Healthy Body Image, preparing them to complete a Poster Presnetation, that they are going to create on  Aurasma (agumented Reality Application).

In this unit students will be inputting data from a survey in to an excel document to display the findings in to a graph that will be used in thier presentation. To present thier reearch and studnets will learn how to use the agumented reality application Aursama, laying thier oral presentation over sections of thier poster to present it in virtual reality.

investigating how emerging digital systems work, for example using an augmented reality app (or blended                reality) and considering how images of real-word objects can be blended with computer-generated                            information to produce a virtual realtiy.

Processess and Production Skills

Accuire, store and validate different types of data, and use a range of software to interpret and visualise data tocreate infomartion (ACTDIP016).

acquiring data from online sources by narrowing focus, for example filtering data using provided options                    or performing queries using advanced search functions.

Lesson break down

Lesson 1 - Body Image. What is it?

During upper-primary years, students increasingly reveal and develop their sense of self-image. The mental perceptions we students hold of their own bodies can be quite different to actual body characteristics.

The lesson seeks to enlighten students of these perceptionsAt the end of the lesson the children will:Question stereotype perceptions of self-image. Reflect on their own perceptions of themselves by creating an annotated sketch of characteristics.

Lesson 2 - Health and Unhealthy Body Image

In response to lesson 1, students ask questions and define healthy and unhealthy body image. Students consider all four aspects of body image: affective, perceptual, cognitive, and behavioural.

At the end of the lesson the children will be able to:

Reflect on self perceptions and discuss why these are often negative. Students research the positive and negative aspects of body image, creating an actions and consequence chart (T-chart) to demonstrate their findings

Lesson 3 - Using Excel to make graphs

In this lesson explores how students can use a program like Microsoft Excel to record data and display this data in different ways. Students will being by practicing recording data ans presenting that data in garphs before doing the same with results from a survey on Body Image that will be incorporated into theit final task.

Lesson 4 - Looking Ahead

This lesson explores the influences that social medias have on self-image. Media exposure is closely related to self-image, particularly in young girls (Grogan, 2007). Students research the importance of self-image and its potential impact on their lives.

At the end of the lesson the children will critically evaluate how media can influence self-image by creating a personal flow-chart to show a sequence of influence.

Lesson 5 - Uisng Ausrama

This lesson introduces the medium for which thier final task will be presented. Aurasma is an augmented reality application that digitally inhances their presentation. Students wil use this application to embed digitally thier Oral Presentation into their Poster for the final task.

Lesson 6 - Being proactive

Students respond to their learning in previous lessons by taking a stand on healthy self-image. Learning encourages students to be proactive in the development of their own healthy body image as well as conveying this message to others in a powerful way.

Students create and present a short speech reflecting their learning by sending a proactive message to others in regards to healthy body image.
