Design and Technologies

About the Unit

In this unit students will be exploring the importance of Recycling. Students will evaluate the sustainability implications of materials, for example materials can be Recycled or Re-used to reduce waste. They will achieve this by investigating how to minimise material use and mange waste by critiquing the environment and social impacts of materials. Students will undertake a series of activites to create a poster to encourage of the importance of Recycling these materials.

Design and Technologies -

Knowledge and Understanding

Examine how people is design and technologies occupations address competing considerations, including sustainability in the design of products, services and environment for current and future use (ACTDEK019).

Evaluating the sustainability implications of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment, for example                   materials can be recycled or re-used to reduce waste; systems may benefit some, but disadvantage others.

Processess and Production Skills

Critique needs or opportunities for designing and investigate materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to achieve intended designed solutions (ACTDEP024).

Investigating how to minimise material use and manage waste by critiquing the environment and social impacts                    of materials, components, tolls and equipment.

Geography

Geographical Knowledge and Understanding

The influence people on the human characteristics of places and the management of spaces within them (ACHGK029)

Investigating a current local planning issue, for example, redevelopment of a site, preservation of open space or                   subdivision of farming land, exploring why people have different views on the issue, and developing a class                         response to it.

Geographical Inquiry skills – Reflecting and responding

Reflect on their learning to propose individual and collective action in response to a contemporary geographical challenge and describe the expected effects of their proposal on different groups of people (ACHGS039)

Assessing possible options as actions that people could take to enhance sustainability and fairness and reduce                   the effects of environmental change on the local community.

Assessment details

The Summative Assessment for this task involves students designing a poster aimed at encouraging other students to recylce. studnets will develop research and presentation skills by researching thier own recycling topic and presenting it to others

Lesson Break down.

Lesson 1

In this lesson, students will learn, in a fun and interactive way, what can and cant be recycled as they work in teams to see how how quickly and accurately they can sort recycling and non-recycleble items.

Lesson Objectives

After completeing this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Identify what is, and is not recyclable in thier local area.

2. Articulate why placing non-recyclable items in the recycling bin in probelematic

3. Know where to go for more information about recycling in their local area.

Lesson 2

In this lesson, students will survey and analyse lunchtime packaging waste in order to identify how much of it is recyclable.

Lesson Objectives

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Identify what is recyclable and what is not in thier local area

2. Carry out a lunchtime waste survey to determine how much lunch packaging in thier school is recyclable

3. Draw conclusions about the results of their recyclable waste survey

4. Discuss ways that packaging waste can be reduced.

Lesson 3

In this lesson students will design a poster aimed at encouraging other students to recycle. students will develop research and presentation skills by researching thier own recycling topic and presenting it to others.

Lesson Objectives

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Describe some of the benefits of recycling to the environment and society

2. Detail the benefits of producing items from recycled material versus producing items from raw materials

3. Explain to others the importance of recycling a material of their choice.
